Conference of the Alumni Network Ukraine-Germany: Wrap-Up

The Conference of the Alumni Network Ukraine-Germany started its work at Karazin University.

The event was held by Karazin University in partnership with Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (Germany) and supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German-Ukrainian Academic Society, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany, the Embassy of Germany in Ukraine.

The conference was a continuation of the cooperation between Karazin University and the University of Würzburg within the project "Alumni Network Ukraine-Germany". Its Kharkiv coordinator was the Head of Karazin University Ukrainian-German Academic Center, Olena Slipchenko.

Among the active participants of the conference were representatives of Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, in particular the Vice-Presidents Wolfgang Riedel and Barbara Sponholz, The Head of the University President’s Office, Josef Wilhelm, the coordinator of the “Alumni Network Ukraine-Germany” project in Wurzburg, Marina Schmitz, the professors Kerstin Bissinger and Gisela Müller-Brandeck-Bocquet, the DAAD lecturer Vera Tersteegen, the member of Kharkiv Regional Society of Germans “Wiedergeburt” Viktor Pushkar.

“It is nice that this is the third conference organized jointly with the DAAD. We hope that during the event, we will find new ideas and opportunities for cooperation,” said the Vice-President Viktor Katrych.

Marina Schmitz presented the activities of the Alumni Network Ukraine-Germany. The purpose of the program is to provide research collaboration and exchange of experience with German graduates. Within the community, there take place various academic, research, social activities aimed at the development and expansion of the network.

Vera Tersteegen told about the DAAD grants for Ukraine for the 2018/2019 academic year. She provided statistics for 2017 on Ukrainian students studying in Germany and receiving the DAAD’s scholarships, in particular, 184 graduate, undergraduate, and 52 postgraduate students. For the past year, the service offered more than 900 projects.

The lecturer said that during the current academic year, the DAAD had offered scholarships for postgraduates for 3 years, for scholars for 1-2 months, and special courses of German as a foreign language for 5 months.

During the conference, those present heard reports on various topics, in particular, “Education for Sustainable Development”, “Technical and Interdisciplinary Research as the Basis of Mutually Beneficial Cooperation with Germany”, “Adaptation of the Ukrainian Economy to the Competitive Challenges of the European Market”, “Quality Management: European Management Practices on the Way to European integration”. The reports continued in the form of a discussion.

Karazin University researchers received suggestions for cooperation from the German partners, in particular, the representatives of Julius-Maximilian University of Würzburg expressed their readiness and interest in cooperation.

In general, the participants of the conference were the School of Physics and Energy, the School of Law, the School of Ecology, the School of Economics, the School of Physics, the School of Mathematics and Computer Sciences, the School of Computer Sciences, the School of Radiophysics, Biomedical Electronics and Computer Systems, and the School of International Economic Relations and Travel Business.

The event continued in the format of reports. Those present had the opportunity to ask questions to the speakers.
