A Memorial Plaque to Nobel Prize Winner Ilya Mechnikov, a Graduate of Karazin University, Unveiled on Helgoland Island.

A memorial plaque to Nobel Prize winner Ilya Mechnikov, a graduate of Kharkiv University, was unveiled in the central square of the island of Helgoland (Germany) in the North Sea on August 18, 2021.

The attendees and speakers of the solemn event were Mayor of Helgoland, Jörg Singer; architect of Helgoland Hendrik Hagmayer; Consul General of Ukraine in Hamburg, Iryna Tybinka; coordinator of scientific programs of the Alfred Wegener Institute Eva-Maria Brodte; Head of the Kharkiv Society for the Study of I. Mechnikov's Legacy, Ihor Serebrennykov; professor of the Department of Zoology and Animal Ecology of the School of Biology Serhii Utievskyi; sculptor, author of the memorial plaque, Serhii Shaulis.

The project was implemented by the Kharkiv Society for the Study of I. Mechnikov's Legacy with the assistance of the Consulate General of Ukraine in Hamburg and the Helgoland community.

It was at the marine biostation of this island that in 1864 the prominent scientist made his first steps in scientific activity, studying marine fauna. The time spent on Helgoland gave impetus to his further discoveries in biology and immunology, which were later recognized by the world scientific community.

During the visit, the Kharkiv delegation got acquainted with the activities of the Biological Center of Helgoland of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, where Serhii Utievskyi gave an open lecture on topical issues of marine zoology.
