Bat Migration: University Warns

Bats are amazing creatures, one of the most numerous groups of mammals in terms of species composition. They are the only mammals capable of sustained and active flight.

These animals are real helpers of people. In particular, bats kill a large number of pests, pollinate plants, spread seeds and fruits, thus helping to save money in agriculture, which is spent on purchasing chemical fertilizers.

In Ukraine, bats are on the brink of extinction and are listed in the Red Book, so it is extremely important to be conscious of their protection.

Every autumn, bats migrate to warm places in search of winter shelter. To do this, they cover thousands of kilometers. Very often bats find shelter in the walls of Karazin University (Northern and Main Buildings): its buildings resemble natural rocks. In search of temporary shelters to rest and sleep, they can fly into the ventilation, open windows and ventilation windows that should not be left unattended for long.

Having got into the space between window frames (frames of old type), bats cannot save themselves and die from heat and dehydration.

Therefore, we urge you to carefully inspect the classrooms and close all windows and ventilation windows after classes, especially in the evening.

In case you notice a bat that has fallen into such a trap, we advise that you contact the Ukrainian Bat Rehabilitation Center (phone: +380 (96) 591-16-24). The Center's biologists will advise on how to give first aid to animals, can come and take them for rehabilitation, if necessary.

Remember that the death of at least one bat is a great loss to our nature.
