35th Anniversary of Chernobyl Disaster: University Remembers

Today is the 35th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.

On April 26, 1986, during an experiment at the No. 4 nuclear reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, two explosions occurred. A cloud of radioactive dust escaped into the Earth's atmosphere. The wind carried dangerous radioactive isotopes to the northwest, which settled on the ground and penetrated into the water. Ukraine has the highest number of victims of the accident among the former republics of the Soviet Union. A powerful cyclone carried radioactive substances across the territories of Austria, Belarus, Great Britain, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, Finland, Sweden, and later — Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany.

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster, the History Museum with the support of the University Media Studio, has prepared a video project dedicated to Karazin University staff — liquidators of the Chernobyl disaster.

The project participants:

  • Associate Professor of the School of Biology Oleksandr Nahlov, who participated in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster in May 1986;
  • Associate Professor of the School of Chemistry Oleksandr Lebid, who participated in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster from June 19 to July 27, 1986;
  • Security Officer Volodymyr Semerenskyi, who took part in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster from June 25 to August 31, 1986;
  • Mykola Reva, Director of the campus, who took part in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster from October 26 to December 15, 1986;
  • Retired Lieutenant Colonel Anatolii Batalov, who participated in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster as commander of the 28th Chemical Defense Regiment of the Ural Military District from October 1986 to December 1987.

You can watch the video here.

In addition, this year the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance has prepared a digest of 11 books, films and articles that will be useful to those who want to learn more about the Chernobyl accident. You can read it here.

We honor the memory of the liquidators and victims of the terrible man-made catastrophe.
