Kharkiv Forum "Science: Dialogue of Generations"

On October 13, 2020, Karazin University hosted the Kharkiv Forum "Science: Dialogue of Generations".

The event brought together heads of higher education institutions, leading research institutions and enterprises, prominent and young scientists of the region, who discussed the state and prospects of science as one of the main drivers of development of the region and the state as a whole.

The forum was moderated by Doctor of Engineering, Professor Edward Simpson. The initiators of the event were: Head of Kharkiv Regional State Administration, Oleksii Kucher, and Karazin University President, Vil Bakirov.

The event had three rounds of discussion: “Science and Society”, “Science and State”, “Science and Economics”. All stages of the forum began with interviews and continued in the format of confrontations between two teams of scientists — older and younger generations.

During the first round of the forum, Oleksii Kucher noted that Kharkiv is the scientific and student capital of Ukraine. Emphasizing the value of the academic sphere, he stressed: “We are spiritually rich, and everything else can be converted, it only takes effort.” Oleksii Kucher also added that representatives of local and central authorities are open to dialogue with scientists and to implementation of their requests.

The newly elected President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Chairman of Karazin University Board of Overseers, Anatolii Zahorodnii, addressed the audience via video link. He expressed his expectations for the event: “I am firmly convinced that the results of this forum will be excellent. The connection between generations will not be lost, the Ukrainian science will develop.”

The second round of the discussion began with an interview with Mykola Kyzym, First Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine. He stressed that it is very important to set the right priorities in research, then science will be needed by society.

During the third part of the forum, Charles Whitehead, a professor and banker from the United States of America, joined the forum via video link. He compared Kharkiv to Boston, emphasizing the development of academic and student spheres in these cities. The professor also noted that American scientists, as well as Ukrainian, have problems with the monetization of research, but these difficulties can be overcome.

The forum participants also raised the issue of the importance of academic knowledge in the modern world, the need to transform the Ukrainian science, consolidate the efforts of the authorities, scientific community and business environment, ways to keep young scientists in Ukraine, etc.

The forum was broadcast live, so everyone interested can watch a video of the event on the pages of Karazin University (Facebook), Kharkiv Regional State Administration (Youtube, Facebook).
