Local Lore Field Internship for History Students

In 2013, Karazin University became the first university in Ukraine to introduce an annual summer local lore field internship for history students. The quarantine conditions of 2020 significantly affected the entire educational process and forced to look for new forms and methods of working with students that would ensure full implementation of all curricula and programs, and at the same time - strict compliance with sanitary and hygienic requirements.

Given these conditions, during August 3-23, the internship took place in a remote format. It was headed by Professor of the Department of Historiography, Source Studies and Archeology of the School of History Serhii Kudelko and Head of the Department of History of Eastern Europe, School of History, Professor Volodymyr Dukhopelnykov. The internship base was the University P. T. Tronko Center for Regional Studies, and it was headed by Deputy Director of the Center, Olha Vovk. More than 60 third-year students of Karazin University School of History took part in the internship.

The main platform for interaction between supervisors and interns was a distance course on the Moodle platform, which contained instructions on occupational safety and health, lecture materials, self-assessment tasks, references to literature and web resources, a list of key terms, and other elements. In addition, there was constant communication with students via telephone and Internet.

The interns were offered creative tasks to perform individually or in small groups. At the same time, the skills and interests of students, the topics of their term papers and dissertations were taken into account.

In addition, an online colloquium was organized for students to discuss issues related to the theory, history and present of regional studies.

Another form of work was writing an essay. Student received individual topics, according to which they had to characterize their native region from a specific point of view (archaeology, ethnography, natural sciences, architecture, etc.).

Creative project prepared within the framework of the local lore internship (authors: Yevhenii Kuzmenko and Oleksandr Stroi) (PDF, 787 Kb).
