Day of Mourning and Commemorating War Victims: University Remembers

On June 22, Ukraine marks Day of Mourning and Commemorating War Victims.

On this day, 79 years ago, despite a secret non-aggression pact (the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact of 1939), Germany attacked Soviet troops along the entire line from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Thus began the struggle of Ukraine at the fronts of World War II, which lasted until May 8, 1945. It was and remains the most terrible page in human history, taking millions of lives around the world.

Students and faculty of Karazin University showed devotion and heroism on the fronts of war, in the rear and in the underground liberation movement.

Doctors, medical assistants, and nurses educated at the University saved the lives of thousands of soldiers and civilians. Among them were Major General of the Medical Service, Chief Surgeon of the Central Military Hospital Petro Mandryk, who treated the commanders of fronts and armies; marshals and generals — Leonid Govorov, Mykola Krylov, Dmytro Leliushenko, and others.

Kharkiv University is also proud of its alumnus, one of the best aircraft designers of the era, Hero of Labor, Mikhail Gurevich, one of the creators of the famous MIG aircraft.

In the most difficult times, when Kharkiv was occupied by the enemy, the University continued to live, teach and discover. In the steppes of Kazakhstan, in the ancient capital of Kzyl-Orda, together with Kyiv University, it continued to fulfill its historical mission.

Hundreds of brave faculty members and students, being in the occupied territories, did everything for the victory. The University student, student battalion trooper, prominent writer Oles Honchar wrote a novel “Unconquered Poltava Girl” about a heroic University student Lialia Ubyivovk, who created an underground resistance group in Poltava.

Eleven alumni of the University were awarded a high title of Hero for feats during the war, among them were Makhmatin Gainutdinov, Vsevolod Kanskyi, Kostiantyn Kuriachyi, Mytrofan Malushchenko, Kuzma Nezdolii, Vasyl Symon, Olena Ubyivovk, Mykola Ulanovskyi, Dmytro Ushakov, Vasyl Chyzhov.

The University honors the memory of all those whose lives were broken and destroyed in that terrible war.
