All-Ukrainian Regional Ethnography Day: University Celebrates

On May 28, Ukraine celebrates Regional Ethnography Day. This holiday was established by the National Union of Ukrainian Ethnographers in 2017. On May 28, 1925, the first All-Ukrainian Regional Ethnography Conference was opened in Kharkiv, where it was decided to create the Ukrainian Regional Ethnography Committee. This day is considered the official date of institutionalization of the domestic ethnography movement.

The purpose of the holiday is to deepen research and popularization of the history, culture, language, customs and traditions of the Ukrainian people, representation of practical achievements in this area; increasing public attention to the activities of ethnographers; deepening cooperation with state authorities, cultural and educational, scientific institutions, public organizations interested in the development of ethnography.

Since the first years of its existence, Karazin University has been developing ethnographic traditions. At the beginning of the 19th century, V. N. Karazin substantiated the need to study and preserve local monuments of the past. A significant contribution to the development of ethnography was the creation of the Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments and the “History of Cities and Villages of the Ukrainian SSR” published in 26 volumes. The main initiator of these projects was Academician P. T. Tronko, later the head of the revived National Union of Ukrainian Ethnographers, Hero of Ukraine, Honorary Doctor and first chairman of the Supervisory Board of Kharkiv University. A memorial plaque was unveiled in his honor on the facade of the University Main Building in 2015.

In 2008, Karazin University opened the first university center of area studies, which in 2011, was named after P. T. Tronko. The staff of the Center conduct excursions and prepare analytical reports, organize exhibitions and genealogical research, conferences and competitions, hold consultations on various issues of history and culture of the region. The Center cooperates with archives and museums, libraries and educational institutions, creative associations and public organizations. On the occasion of Ethnography Day, the Center has prepared an online project — an interactive map of Sloboda Ukraine landscapes.

Congratulations to ethnographers on the holiday, wishes of professional and life achievements!
