Vyshyvanka Day: University Celebrates

Traditionally, on the third Thursday of May, Ukraine celebrates Vyshyvanka Day, a relatively young holiday that aims to popularize our culture, in particular to preserve the ancient traditions of wearing national clothing, as well as to promote the unity of the Ukrainian people.

The holiday was established in Chernivtsi in 2006. Students of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University proposed the idea of the “World Vyshyvanka Day” action and one day came wearing the Ukrainian traditional clothes. Initially, the action was supported by several dozens of students and instructors of the University, but in subsequent years the holiday became national, the Ukrainian diaspora around the world, as well as everyone wishing to support Ukraine joined it.

It is important to remember that the vyshyvanka is not only an element of traditional clothing, but also a unique code of the Ukrainian ethnic group, which is of very ancient origin. The first vyshyvankas were not so much clothing as, according to beliefs, a charm against evil. Therefore, shirts were decorated with patterns on the sleeves, collars and hem so that the pattern touches the body. Today, the vyshyvanka is considered fashionable not only in Ukraine, but also inspires designers around the world to create unique collections based on embroidery, which is presented in a variety of options.

For many years in a row, on Vyshyvanka Day, people hold various marches, fairs, art educational actions, and other cultural events. However, this year we need to consider the spread of coronavirus infection and related quarantine measures. As mass gatherings are impossible, Karazin University offers to join the online flashmob “Karazin University in Vyshyvankas”. For terms of participation, click here. Authors of most-liked photos will receive nice gifts with the University’s symbols!
