French-CERN-Ukrainian School of High Energy and Medical Physics

The French-CERN-Ukrainian School of High Energy and Medical Physics has started its work at Karazin University.

The University President, Vil Bakirov, welcomed those present and emphasized that the French-CERN-Ukrainian School addresses very important, topical issues. “This event, which brings together experienced scientists in this field, promotes the exchange of valuable experience,” he said.

Director General of the National Science Center, "Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology, Mykola Schulha, said in his welcoming address: “Our cooperation with French physicists started a long time ago, it is fruitful in the field of physics and nuclear medicine. We look forward to continued cooperation.

The event lecturers are leading scientists in the field of fundamental and applied aspects of high energy physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, and medical physics, including radiobiology and radiotherapy for cancer treatment from the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Université Paris—Sud and Université Paris—Saclay, National Center for Scientific Research of France (CNRS), and the Education and Research Institute “School of Physics and Technology” of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, and the National Science Center “Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology”.

The Technical Manager of the Institut Curie (Paris, France) Samuel Meyroneinc made a presentation "Accelerators for Medical Physics". He spoke about the Institut Curie he works at. According to him, it is one of the leading medical, biological and biophysical research centers in the world, a private non-profit foundation operating a research center in biophysics, cell biology, oncology and a hospital specializing in cancer treatment.

Samuel Meyroneinc acquainted those present with the peculiarities and development of radiation and proton therapy, noting that in proton therapy, radiotherapists use ultra-precise ballistic radiation, highly useful for treating tumors close to sensitive organs, particularly in children.

The school will cover state-of-the-art radiation detector technologies and advanced imaging systems for biological and medical research. This school is addressed to the wide audience and provides a discussion platform of new developments in related instrumentation and techniques, treatment using particle therapy and radio-guided operative cancer surgery, quantitative models of tumors. The CERN expertise in medical physics research will be also presented.
