One Step Ahead Project: Lecture by Leading Business Coach Philippe Rager "Leadership = Mission Impossible?"

Within the framework of the One Step Ahead project, Karazin University hosted the lecture “Leadership = Mission Impossible?" by the Director of the HR Department of the German company “Smith & Nephew AG”, a leading business coach and certified HR manager, Philippe Rager.

During the visit, Mr. Rager met with the Vice-President Zarif Nazyrov, and they discussed the prospects for further cooperation. The Vice-President acquainted Philippe Rager with the University’s past and present and said that Alma Mater focuses particular attention on international cooperation, “There are more than 4,000 international students studying at the University under special adaptation programs covering, in particular, cultural, religious and economic aspects. Beyond that, in the context of international cooperation, the University offers various student exchange programs: Erasmus+, K2. The University is currently participating in a migration policy program.”

During the lecture, Philippe Rager described the interaction between the manager and various types of employees, using a simulation technique. According to the speaker, a team employs people with different personalities, preferences, needs and peculiarities; therefore, the main task of a genuine and successful leader is to correctly guide and motivate employees for the overall result.

One of the important factors for building a team is the orientation towards the employee’s personality type. Philippe Rager spoke about the features of sanguine, melancholic, phlegmatic, and choleric personality types. Using the example of Alexander of Macedon, the lecturer demonstrated the result of a successful management: the commander knew all the names of his numerous soldiers.

At the end, Zarif Nazyrov thanked the lecturer and said that the University would continue the project and make lectures a tradition in order to acquaint everyone interested with up-to-date development trends. Also, Philippe Rager received a certificate confirming the status of Merited Lecturer of Karazin University.
