The Cultural Center is a university subdivision which coordinates, organizes, and develops all spheres of extracurricular work aimed at the rebirth and development of Ukrainian culture. It caters for the aesthetic activities of students and staff members, organizes their leisure, and fulfils social and cultural orders of University units.
The Center organizes annual matriculation and graduation ceremonies, the artistic freshmen competition Alma Mater, New Year festivities, the satire and humor festival Humorina, days of the University Schools Students’ Spring, the beauty contest Miss University, the international festival of science fiction and popular science Zoryanyi Mist (the Star Bridge).
An important part in the students’ aesthetic upbringing is played by amateur ensembles. For five years the University has been represented by the folk-dancing ensemble Sontsevorot (the Solstice) under the leadership of the I. Koshchavets, an Honored Art Worker of Ukraine. The ensemble is laureate of the municipal contests Kharkiv is 350 and The Victory is 60, the P. Virskyi Ukrainian National Contest of Folk Choreography, the International Festival of German Culture in the Crimea, the festival Slobidska Ukraine Talents Constellation, the traditional folk-culture festival Krokoveye Kolo, the Kharkiv open festival of Russian folk art Talytsya (the Glade), the Christmas art festival Winter Solstice, and the International Folk Dance Festival in Varna, Bulgaria. The ensemble has also represented the Kharkiv Region in two summary concerts of the best ensembles held in Kyiv. Quite popular with the students is also the ensemble of modern dance Favorite headed by O. Prymak that became laureate of the municipal artistic contests Kharkiv is 350 and Students’ Spring 2006. For many years the Cultural Center has supported the show ballet Contrast headed by L. Potimkova, the folk-group Vesnyanky (Spring Songs) headed by O. Shyshkina, Honorary Artist of Ukraine, and the University teams of the Club of the Merry and the Smart, including Unibersity, Expromt, and others. Particular attention is also paid to choral and solo singing. In 2004, a students’ choir was organized under the leadership of A. Syrotenko, laureate of the International Choirmasters Contest. The choir is laureate of the municipal contest Students’ Spring and an active participant in other municipal and regional contests.
