Kharkiv University School of Law traces its history back to 1804, when the Section of Moral and Political Sciences was founded and later obtained the status of a University School.

Initially, the School consisted of seven Departments, and in 1905 it numbered already twelve: the Department of Roman Law, the Department of Civil Law and Civil Justice, the Department of Commercial Law and Commercial Justice, the Department of Criminal Law and Criminal Justice, the Department of the History of Russian Law, the Department of the State and Law, the Department of Ecclesiastical Law, the Department of Political Law, the Department of International Law, the Department of Financial Law, the Department of Political Economy and Statistics, the Department of the History of Law Philosophy, and the Department of the Encyclopaedia of Law.

The first dean of the School of Law was Johan Schad.

The School history was made by outstanding jurists, including, O.V. Kunitsyn, O.I. Palyumbetskyi,D.I. Kachenovskyi, A.M.Stoyanov,M.A. Gredeskul, M.M. Alekseyenko, and V.M. Koretskyi, who became the founding fathers of jurisprudence in Ukraine. Professor V.M. Koretskyi initiated the foundation of the Institute of the State and Law, named after him, at the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences

In 1920, the School of Law was closed, and it became the foundation for the newly established School of Law of the Kharkiv Institute of National Economy, which later grew into the National Academy of Law.

The School of Law was re-established in 2004. It trains highly qualified lawyers to provide legal support for Ukrainian statehood, fundamental legislative and judicial reforms, intensified judicial protection of civil rights and freedoms, and crime control. The rebirth of the School within the walls of one of the oldest universities of Eastern Europe was urged by the necessity to renew the structure of a classical university and to provides qualified jurists for various state, public and law enforcement agencies.

The School provides full-time and part-time training in Law both for state budget and contract students.

The students are licensed as bachelors (4-year deree program) and specialists (5year degree programs)

Areas of research: supremacy of law as the legal foundation of the state and the civil society; urgent issues of justice, strengthening legality and combating criminality; law of the European Union; copyright law; protecting intellectual property; problems of the penitentiary system; and structure of law enforcement agencies and courts Ukraine.

The School introduces new qualifications depending on the demand in various areas of legal practice; develops international cooperation; designs new content of legal subjects taught at universities; and updates the content of legal subjects in a new generation of textbooks, guidelines, methodological and information means of training.
