The School dates back to 1930, when N.K. Krupska Kharkiv Teacher Training Institute of Foreign Languages was founded. The School of Foreign Languages trains specialists in Foreign Philology with the command of two, three, and more foreign languages.
Academic training at the School is available through full-time and part-time (correspondence) courses. The School also offers the so-called ‘parallel training’ for students of other University Schools or other Kharkiv universities. The School also provides an opportunity to obtain a re-training certificate and confers a second degree in Foreign Philology.
Tuition is financed from the state budget or on the fee-paying basis. To become a student, the applicant has to pass 2 entrance exams: a written test in a foreign language (English, German, French or Spanish) and a dictation in Ukrainian.
The School offers 4-year bachelor degree programs in Philology and confers master’s degrees in Philology after one more year of study. A bachelor obtains a basic higher education in Foreign Philology; a Specialist or a Master of Philology obtains a complete higher education and is licensed to work as a lecturer, translator or interpreter with two and more foreign languages. At present, the School enrolls about 1,000 students, including international students.
The School provides professional training in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, and Japanese, basic and profession-oriented subjects, including Introduction to Linguistics, History of World Literature, Latin, Lexicology, Theoretical Grammar, Stylistics, Linguistic Aspects of Country Studies, Theory and Practice of Translation, Information Technologies, Introduction to Literary Criticism, Pedagogy, Foreign Language Teaching, and Speech Culture. The School also offers elective courses in Problems of Translation and Foreign Philology.
The School runs postgraduate courses and has a specialized council for conferring candidate’s degrees in the Germanic Languages (English and German). The School publishes the Kharkiv University Bulletin: Romanic and Germanic Philology, Translation Science and Foreign Language Teaching.
The School’s training facilities include two computer classrooms, a computer network with access to the Internet, video and audio eguipment, and a publishing center. The School is continuously expanding its activities. Recently it has created a Linguistic Center that runs foreign language courses, summer schools, and offers translation services.
The School’s faculty numbers about 100 highly qualified professionals, among them 40 associate professors and 8 full professors.
