School of Chemistry
Web site: http://www-chemistry.univer.kharkov.ua/
The School provides bachelor’s and master’s degree opportunities in Chemistry, and postgraduate programs for obtaining candidate’s degrees in Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Analytical Chemistry.
Kharkiv University has been providing teaching in Chemistry since its very first days. In 1864, on the initiative of the prominent chemist M.M. Beketov, the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv Imperial University was divided into the Section of Mathematics, the Section of Natural Sciences, and the Section of Physics and Chemistry. Kharkiv University introduced a course in Physical Chemistry in 1865, 20 years earlier than universities in Western Europe and the USA. In 1894, the Department of Chemistry was trans-formed into the chemical subdivision of the School of Physics and Mathematics with Sections of Organic, Inorganic, and Analytical Chemistry. This was how the School of Chemistry was started.
In 1933, the Research Institute of Chemistry started its activities at the School. The University’s major achievements in organic chemistry are associated with the names and schools of O.P. Eltekov, F.M. Flavytskyi,
O.A. Albytskyi, Corresponding Fellow of the USSR Academy of Sciences K.A. Krasuskyi, H.V. Korshun, M.A. Valyashko, Yu.O. Habel, and Ye.S. Khotynskyi; in physical chemistry with the names of M.M. Beketov, P.D. Khrushchov, V.F. Tymofeyev, H.Ye. Mukhin, Ye.M. Hapon, and Corresponding Fellow of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences M.A. Izmaylov.
A substantive contribution to the development of analytical chemistry and chemical metrology was made by M.P. Komar’s chemical school.
Among the School’s graduates and faculty are prominent Ukrainian scholars, Academicians of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences A.I. Kiprianov, I.M. Frantsevych, L.M. Lytvynenko, and V.N. Yeremenko.
At present the School employs 15 full professors and 33 associate professors. It enrolls about 400 students.
The School provides training according to full-time and part-time curricula. Students obtain profound knowledge in Inorganic, Analytical, Organic, Physical, Colloid, and Quantum Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Chemical Ecology, Polymeric Chemistry, Structure of Matter, Radiochemistry and Radioecology, Crystal ?hemistry and other subjects.
The Kharkv National University Bulletin (Chemistry) was founded in 1935 and is published once or twice a year. It is reviewed in the Chemical Abstracts and the "Khimiya" (Chemistry) journal. The Higher Licensing Committee of Ukraine has listed the Bulletin as a professional journal for publishing results of theses in Chemistry. Papers are published in Russian, Ukrainian, and English.
