The School of Biology started in 1804 as the Department of Natural History and Botany of the Section of Physics and Mathematics.
University biologists have made a significant contribution to Ukrainian and world science. Among them are I. Mechnikov, a Nobel prize winner; the famous botanists V. Chernyayev, A. Pitra, L. Reingardt, L. Tsenkovskyi, V. Arnoldi, O. Korshykov, L. Shkorbatov, O. Matviyenko, and Yu. Prokudin; the mycologists and phytopathologists A. Potebnya, and T. Strakhov; the plant physiologists V. Palladin, V. Rotert, and H. Semenenko; the zoologists O. Chernay, O. Nikolskyi, V. Stanchinskyi, S. Medvedyev, Ye. Umanskyi, and M. Kalabukhov; the human and animal physiologists I. Shchelkov, V. Danilevskyi, O. Nahornyi, and V. Nikitin; the biochemists I. Bulankin, Ye. Parina, and P. Kaliman; the geneticists I. Polyakov, M. Dubinin, and V. Shakhbazov.
The School provides training in Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, and Physiology for full-time and part-time (correspondence) students.
At present, the School’s faculty includes 13 full professors and 45 associate professors, who take part in student training and research.
High standards of training are reinforced by study and research facilities: a biological station, a hydrobiological laboratory, the Botanical Garden, the Museum of Natural History, and the Kharkiv National University Institute of Biology.
The School offers courses in the Humanities and core subjects: Zoology, Botany, Ecology, Human Anatomy, Cytology, Histology, Genetics, Selection, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Virology, Immunology, Biophysics, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Evolution Theories, and many others.
The School hosts a specialized council for conferring doctor’s degrees in Biochemistry and Physiology and a specialized council for conferring candidate’s degrees in Genetics.
