International Scientific Conference “Multiwavelength Astrophysics from Radio to Gamma-Rays”: Opening


Karazin University has held an opening of the International Scientific Conference “Multiwavelength Astrophysics from Radio to Gamma-Rays”.

The Presidium included the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Italy in Ukraine, Davide La Cecilia, the Director of the National Institute of Astrophysics, Filippo Zerbi, the President of the Ukrainian Astronomical Association, Yaroslav Yatskiv, the Italian astrophysicist, Doctor Honoris Causa of Karazin University, Massimo Capaccioli, the Director of the Department of Science and Education of Kharkiv Regional State Administration, Larysa Karpova, and the University President, Vil Bakirov.

“It is a great honor for me to open a conference at the University, where astronomy as a science has been developing for over 300 years. The University trained and employed famous astronomers and astrophysicists of the XX century, particularly Nikolay Barabashov, Boris Gerasimovich, and others. The event brings together many leading and outstanding scientists in astronomy. I am convinced that the conference will be of great importance in the development of science at the international level,” pointed out Mr. Bakirov at the beginning of the event.

Ms. Karpova emphasized that the rapid development of astronomical research in Kharkiv region had contributed to the recognition of the region as one of the world research centers. She also expressed the hope that the conference would promote developing the international relations.

Mr. Davide La Cecilia also pointed out that the conference would open up a lot of possibilities for international cooperation.

Mr. Yatskiv noted that this conference is a historical event in the field of astronomy. Karazin University gave an example for the whole Ukraine, becoming a co-organizer of such an important scientific conference. Also, the President of the Ukrainian Astronomical Association handed over a congratulatory letter to Pilippo Zerbi from the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Borys Paton, and memorable souvenirs to other members of the Presidium.

Mr. Zerbi spoke about the first Ukrainian-Italian meeting that took place in Rome in March 2018. As a result, 20 leading Italian scientists in astronomy expressed a desire to attend a conference in Kharkiv. According to him, the conference, organized with the support of the Italian Embassy in Ukraine, will promote cooperation between the scientists of the two nations and foster creating new joint projects.

At the end of the event, Mr. Capaccioli expressed his gratitude to all the participants of the conference for fruitful and active work.
