Conference in Geography and Cartography: Opening


Karazin University held an opening of the ХХІІ International science conference “Pressing Problems of Continuous Geographical Education and Cartography” uniting specialists uniting specialists from the fields of geography and cartography from Belarus, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine. This year the scientific event is dedicated to the centenary of the birthday of University Professor H. P. Dubynskyi.

The conference was opened with a speech on Professor H. P. Dubynskyi’s life made by Professor V. A. Peresadko, Dean of the School of Geology and Geography: “On the occasion of the centenary the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate students prepared an name type atlas containing Professor H. P. Dubynskyi’s genealogy, biographical data and scientific achievements. In this way we would like to honor the memory of the distinguished scientist of Karazin University who made an extraordinary contribution to the development of our School.”

The conference convened to discuss pressing problems of continuous geographical education and cartography, generalize field-related experience and outline prospects for development and implementation into the process of education of innovative methods and educational technologies that are new by the subject matter, content and structure of maps, atlases, curricula and literature.

During the conference its participants devoted special attention to matters of methods of teaching geographical disciplines in higher school, mapping of the educational kit of Ukraine, emergency situations, the role of innovative technologies in the educational process, etc.

The conference agenda also includes exhibitions of new educational geographical maps and atlases, educational literature in geography and cartography as well as an exhibition dedicated to the centenary of the birthday of University Professor H. P. Dubynskyi.

For reference. H. P. Dubynskyi was a famous national meteorologist, professor of the Department of Physical Geography and Cartography of Karazin University. The scientist conducted climatic and agroclimatic studies. His first works were devoted to climate of Western Siberia. H. P. Dubynskyi’s and his colleagues’ many-year research resulted in development of new efficient means of combating drought in southern and eastern steppe regions of Ukraine, justification o conditions and norms of artificial irrigation for leading agricultural crops with allowance for the local geographical conditions.
