Opening of the Photo Exhibition “From Oblivion to Exploit Recognition: 70-Year Journey”


Karazin University is hosting the photo exhibition “From Oblivion to Exploit Recognition: 70-Year Journey”. The exhibition is devoted to Kazakhs’ contribution to liberation of Kharkiv and Kharkiv oblast during the Great Patriotic War. The exposition is prepared by Kharkiv City National Public Association of Kazakhs “Birlik” under the aegis of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Ukraine and V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

The opening was attended by Argin Ospanov, Minister-Counselor of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Ukraine, Yaroslav Zhylkin, executive secretary of the State inter-departmental commission for perpetuating the memory of the war victims and political repressions, Sergey Semenov, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Kharkiv, Olha Dutova, Head of the Department of Internal Policy of Kharkiv Regional State Administration, Oleksandr Sterin, Head of the Department for Civil Associations, Z. F. Nazyrov, Vice-President of the University, Iryna Zhuravlova, Director of the Central Scientific Library of Karazin University, representatives of Kharkiv City National Public Association of Kazakhs “Birlik” and other guests of honor, University faculty and staff members and students.

“Today’s exhibition is another step on the way towards more fruitful cooperation between Karazin University and Kazakhstan in the field of education. This year the University has admitted 80 Kazakhs. I hope this number will only increase with years to come,” said Z. F. Nazyrov.

The exhibition presents archived wartime documents, photographs, memoirs of witnesses of the warfare as well as rare documents collected in the last three years by the search party of Kharkiv City National Public Association of Kazakhs “Birlik”.

“This exhibition is unique for it opens a new, unknown page in the history of the Great Patriotic War. We can learn about the feat of the Soviet people in general and Kazakhs in particular. This work should continue in the name of unity of our peoples. Our common duty is to cherish the memory about the victors,” stressed Argin Ospanov.

Visitors of the exhibition will learn about the fate and exploits of the forgotten 106th Kazakh National Cavalry Division (Akmolinsk), 102nd Infantry Division of the 2nd Formation (Chimkent), 38th Infantry Division (Almaty) as well as about young composer Ali Bazanov and one of the first Kazakh conductors Gabdilman Matov who were killed during the liberation of Kharkiv, political instructor of the 219th Infantry Division Khiva Mukanov whose name was given to one of the streets in Balakleya (Kharkiv oblast), famous Kazakh sniper Erkymbai Uly Sultan who was killed during the liberation of Izium region (Kharkiv oblast), and the like.

The exhibition is accompanied by book-illustrative exhibits “Kharkiv. Fire Years of 1941–1943” and “Kazakhstan during the Great Patriotic War”. Besides, the show presents over 70 editions: monographs, albums, compendia of documents, memoirs portraying the history of Kharkiv during the Great Patriotic War.
