Karazin University History: Ilya Repin and Kharkiv University

On August 5, the academic community of Karazin University honors the memory of the famous painter Ilya Repin on the occasion of his birthday. The artist’s life and work are closely connected to his small motherland — Kharkiv.

Cultural and art events were organized at I. Yu. Repin Art Memorial Museum in the homeland of the artist in Chuhuiv of Kharkiv region. Among them was the art festival “On a Visit to Repin”, a presentation of new editions on Repin, a closing ceremony of the XX International Repin plein air and the exhibition of its participants’ works, an awarding of I. Yu. Repin Prize for outstanding sculptures, decorative and monumental art, theatricalized holiday “Ukrainian Heart of Ilya Repin”, and more.

Representatives of local authorities and self-government, artists, employees of museums, libraries and other cultural institutions, and connoisseurs of I. Yu Repin’s art came to the holiday. Karazin University was represented by Olha Vovk, Deputy Director of P. T. Tronko Center for Area Studies.

During the holidays, the collection of I. Yu. Repin Art Memorial Museum was replenished with new exhibits. In particular, the People’s Artist of Ukraine, Doctor Honoris Causa of Karazin University Viktor Kovtun gave the museum the collection of paintings “My Land — Sloboda Ukraine”, for which, in 2010, he was awarded Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine.

Today, it is a little-known fact that the artist had numerous connections with Kharkiv University, its graduates and lecturers. This is described in the article by Olha Vovk, Deputy Director of P. T. Tronko Center for Area Studies.
