Assembly of Academic Boards: Grand Meeting to Mark University’s 214th Anniversary

V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University is celebrating its 214th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the University has held a grand meeting of the Assembly of Academic Boards with the participation of the administration, faculty members, students, and friends of the University.

Among honorary guests were the Head of the University’s Board of Overseers, Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Anatolii Zahorodnii, the Deputy Head of Kharkiv Regional State Administration, Anatolii Babichev, the businessman, President of DCH Financial and Industrial Group, Oleksandr  Yaroslavskyi, the Director of Kharkiv Regional Philharmonic, Yurii Yanko, the Director General of the National Scientific Center “Kharkiv Physical-Technical Institute”, Mykola Shulha, the Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Kharkiv, Janusz Jablonski.

The University President, Vil Bakirov, addressed those present in his welcoming speech (full text, PDF, 4.4 Mb), wishing the University prosperity and success, “According to the old tradition, the University corporations, community, our Karazin University family gather to celebrate the next anniversary of the University.”

Anatolii Babichev also welcomed those present and said that Kharkiv University is the only higher education institution in Ukraine of world class according to all international rankings.

“I congratulate everyone on behalf of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and its President, Borys Paton. It is impossible to overstress the importance of our cooperation and friendship. The University prepares staff for the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kharkiv institutes of the Academy. The University’s further development looks very promising,” said Anatolii Zahorodnii.

The Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Kharkiv, Janusz Jablonski, expressed his gratitude for fruitful cooperation and development of the Polish-Ukrainian relations. He also congratulated the University on the anniversary of its opening.

During the event, the University President, Vil Bakirov, made the report “Kharkiv University: Charity Traditions”. He mentioned the names of patrons who made a significant contribution to the development of the University from the very first years of its existence. They allocated funds, replenished the collections of valuable publications of the libraries, handed over masterpieces of famous artists, pieces of folk and sacred art, natural and geological collections to the museums, and also established student scholarships. There was presented a calendar for 2019 depicting the University’s collections, many of which were initiated due to charitable events. The University President thanked the Student Council for the initiative to hold charity winter balls and said that that was a continuation of the University’s charity traditions.

During the event, the inauguration of Doctors Honoris Causa took place. This year, the diplomas of the University Doctor Honoris Causa, medals and gowns were awarded to Oleksandr Yaroslavskyi for his outstanding contribution to the development of the national economy, regional infrastructure, comprehensive support of culture and sports, longstanding promotion of the University; and to Yurii Yanko for the outstanding contribution to the development of art and culture, aesthetic education of youth, creative cooperation with the University.

In his turn, Oleksandr Yaroslavskyi gave the University a subscription to the full-text database of Oxford University publication containing 330 modern scientific journals in various fields. Students and employees will have access to the resource using their organizational email address. Karazin University is the only university in Ukraine that have such a subscription. Yurii Yanko presented the University with a box-seat in the new hall of Kharkiv Regional Philharmonic for any play.

The University employees were awarded with prizes for high achievements in teaching, research and educational work in 2018. The III degree prize was awarded to the Head of the Department of History of Foreign Literature and Classical Philology of the School of Philology, Yevheniia Chekareva, the Associate Professor of Mykola Lukash Translation Studies Department of the School of Foreign Languages Alla Olkhovska, the Associate Professor of the Department of Social and Economic Geography and Regional Studies of the School of Geology, Geography, Recreation and Tourism Kateryna Sehida. The V. N. Karazin Prize was awarded to the Leading Researcher of the Astronomical Research Institute Yurii Shkuratov. The Prize of Merited Professor of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University was awarded to the Dean of the School of Physics, Ruslan Vovk, and the Dean of the School of Philosophy, Ivan Karpenko.

The University’s cerificates for high achievements in educational and scientific activities were awarded to students who won the most prestigious international tournaments in physics, who repeatedly won the competitions with representatives of leading European universities. In particular, the awards were given to the students of the School of Physics and Technology, Oryna Ivashtenko, Oleksii Lukianchuk, Oleh Ivashtenko, to the students of the School of Physics Oleksandr Nikolaienko, Olha Zaitseva, Ihor Sikachyna, Maksym Mazanov.

The University’s certificate was awarded to the Associate Professor of the Academician I. M. Lifshitz Department of Theoretical Physics of the School of Physics, Head of the team of students at the All-Ukrainian Physics Tournament, Merited Teacher of Ukraine, Head of Ukraine’s team at the 2018 International Physics Tournament Zakhar Maizelis, who prepares participants for international competitions.

The grand meeting finished with the performance of the student choir of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, artistic director Andrii Syrotenko.
