University Students Become Finalists of Contest to Mark 100th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Unity Day

On January 21, 2019, M. Dragomanov National Pedagogical University held a roundtable to mark the 100th anniversary of Ukraine’s Unity Day, and a ceremony of awarding the winners of the contest of creative works “Idea of Unity: History, Modernity, Future”.

The participants of the event were the students of Karazin University School of Philology Anna Kolesnykova and Alina Makhonina, who became finalists of Karazin University contest.

The contest gave an opportunity to interested, active students having their own opinion in this regard to show themselves, to join in the reflections on the importance of social unity.

The rountable started with the introductory speech by the Vice-President for Research and Teaching of the Schools of Humanities of M. Dragomanov National Pedagogical University, Ihor Vietrov. He said that in different periods of history, Ukrainians did not have their own state, and now, when they finally have independence they must protect it. According to Ihor Vietrov, everyone  must do it in their own place: soldiers can protect it with weapons, and students can make discoveries, because it is not only interesting, but also important.

During the event, the students viewed the idea of unity from different perspectives. They drew attention to the problem of ignorance of many Ukrainians about the reunion of the People’s Republic of Ukraine and the People’s Republic of West Ukraine that took place in 1919, and as a result of which we annually celebrate Ukraine’s Unity Day.

The students studied the implementation of the idea of unity in the works of writers, journalists, volunteers, in social and political events (in particular, using the example of the "Human Chain“ made by Ukrainians from Lviv to Kyiv in 1990), in the subsequent historical events, marking the role of the “sixties” in the development of Ukraine’s independence.

At the end, the winners of the contest of creative works “Idea of Unity: History, Modernity, Future” were awarded commemorative prizes.
