Grand Opening of Regional Stage of All-Ukrainian Olympiads Among Schoolchildren

Karazin University has held a grand opening of the regional stage of the All-Ukrainian school subject Olympiads among schoolchildren.

The event participants were the Deputy Head of Kharkiv Regional State Administration Anatolii Babichev, the University President, Vil Bakirov, the Dean of the School of Mathematics and Computer Sciences, Jury Chairman of the regional stage of the All-Ukrainian Mathematical Olympiad among schoolchildren, Hryhorii Zholtkevych, students of general secondary education institutions of Kharkiv region — winners of the II stage of the All-Ukrainian Mathematical Olympiad among schoolchildren, leaders of regional (city, united territorial communities) school teams.

Those present heard about the first All-Ukrainian Mathematical Olympiad among schoolchildren in 1936. One of its winners was a Kharkiv tenth-grader Oleksii Pohorielov, who later graduated from Karazin University, an outstanding geometrician, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.  The participants traced the history of the Olympiad movement development in independent Ukraine, which started in 1991 with mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry competitions. There were summed up the results of Olympiads held in 2018. In particular, 1,310 schoolchildren won at the regional stage. The participants in the final stage were 120 schoolchildren of Kharkiv region, 105 of whom became winners. They were presented with 25 1st place awards, 41 2nd place awards, 39 3rd place awards.

Anatolii Babichev addressed those present in his welcoming speech, “Mathematics is one of the foundations of human development, of all countries and civilization in general. We are proud of the Olympiad results and schoolchildren’s achievements. Today, the state invests much money in the development of science and education, the education system is being reformed. I would like to convey congratulations to you from the Governor of the region, Yuliia Svitlychna, for whom education and science is the priority.” He also wished inspirational work and expressed gratitude to Karazin University, teachers and parents involved in preparing schoolchildren.

“It is great that the opening of the regional stage starts with a mathematical Olympiad at Karazin University. For 200 years, it has had strong traditions in mathematics. Among the University students were Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi, Volodymyr Steklov, Oleksii Pohorielov, Volodymyr Marchenko, as well as Anatolii Babichev who studied at the School of Mechanics and Mathematics. I am confident that among young and talented people in this hall there are future winners of international Olympiads,” said Vil Bakirov and wished the schoolchildren success.

Hryhorii Zholtkevych also joined in the congratulations and said, “Today, you are becoming a part of the mathematical family, and new opportunities are opening up for you. For example, the outstanding geometrician Oleksii Pohorielov started his mathematics career with victories at school Olympiads, and later he solved challenging geometry tasks. So there are people to look up to. May your persistence bring you victory.”

A graduate of Kharkiv Physics and Mathematics Lyceum No. 27, a first-year student of Karazin University School of Mathematics and Computer Sciences, a three-time winner of the International Mathematical Olympiad Ngo Ngok Thai Shon addressed the schoolchildren, teachers and the administration, “Everyone present here already has a victory to their credit, but remember that a victory in the Olympiad is not the most important thing, the efforts you have made to get to the Olympiad are much more important.”

Congratulations on the opening of the regional stage of All-Ukrainian Olympiads among schoolchildren! May success attend you!
