Lecture on Counteraction to Violence by UN Experts

Karazin University held a lecture with the participation of international experts from the UN Refugee Agency in Ukraine. The lecture was dedicated to the problems of detection, response and prevention of violence. The event was part of the International Campaign “16 Days Without Violence” held annually between November 25 and December 10 in more than 100 countries.

Those present watched a video about this year’s “16 Days Without Violence” campaign initiated by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership in 1991 in order to attract public attention to the problems of domestic violence, as well as to enhance the activities of state structures and public organizations for protecting women’s rights and forming a non-violence ideology in society.

At the beginning, the crisis counselor, Head of the Charitable Foundation for Health, Svitlana Tavarantseva, told those present about the counteraction to gender-related violence in modern society and the protection of those at risk. She noted that the reasons for refusing assistance are widespread stereotypes, a sense of shame, fear of loneliness, economic costs, inability to receive services and a fear of the aggressor’s revenge.

Those present found out that Kharkiv is the first city in Ukraine where the shelter was opened — a place where women are offered refuge. “There is a 24-hour hotline — the largest coordination point in Ukraine where you can get anonymous advice. You only need to describe the situation you are in, and the employees will coordinate your further actions,” said Ms Svitlana.

“The law enforcement system begins with the victim. The prosecutor’s office and law enforcement agencies will not be able to open a criminal proceeding unless there is a statement from the victim party. It is necessary for all people of any gender to realize their importance and the importance of their procedural role. We need to inform violators of our freedoms, in particular, that their behavior is abnormal and asocial,” said Anita Rudyk, a law specialist at the UN Refugee Agency in Kharkiv.

At he end, everyone willing could ask questions to the experts.
