Kharkiv Researcher Mykola Shemet Gives Lecture Dedicated to Barbara Karinska’s Birthday


V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University has held an open lecture by Kharkiv researcher, graphic artist, journalist Mykola Shemet, dedicated to the birth anniversary of a Kharkiv University non-degree student and Oscar winner Barbara Karinska.

The event took place at the initiative of the Advertising and Branding of the University Center for Public Relations and the Window on America Center of the Central Scientific Library.

The event moderator was the specialist of the Advertising and Branding of the University Center for Public Relations, historian Maryna Hryhorieva. At the beginning of the event, she said, “What is significant is that yesterday was International Ballet Day, and today is the birthday of the famous designer, author of the modern ballet pack, Karazin University non-degree student, Barbara Karinska.”

Mykola Shemet told those present about the Kharkiv period of Barbara Karinska’s life, “Barbara was born on October 3, 1886, was baptized in the Annunciation Cathedral. Her father was a well-known Kharkiv merchant, and her mother was a famous philanthropist. The girl was the third child of ten. She did not want to lag behind her brothers, so in 1906, she became a non-degree student at Kharkiv University School of Law,” said the lecturer.

It is known that Barbara Karinska was actively involved in public activities, in particular, was a member of Kharkiv Charitable Society, and many other Kharkiv charitable organizations.

The lecturer said that after the emigration, Barbara collaborated with theaters, created costumes for ballet dancers, for Broadway, worked with well-known actors, directors, designers, athletes. In total, the designer created costumes for over 200 ballets and 20 operas. Her work is recognized worldwide, and her design of costumes for the film “Joan of Arc” received Oscar.
