Karazin University Receives a Delegation from US National Science Foundation

Karazin University has received a delegation from the US National Science Foundation comprising the directors of the programs of the US National Science Foundation, Tessema Guebre and Maija Kukla, the Head of the Reactor Operations and Engineering Group of the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, Thomas Newton.

The agenda included a meeting during which Karazin University was represented by its President, Vil Bakirov, Vice-Presidents Mykola Azarienkov and Zarif Nazyrov, the Head of the Research Unit, Volodymyr Sukhov, the Director of the Innovation Center, Volodymyr Shlokin, the Head of the International Relations Department, Oleksandr Khyzhniak, the Administration of the University schools.

In his welcoming speech, Mr. Bakirov told the guests about the University, particularly its history, structure, schools, scientific achievements, “Karazin University boasts a variety of scientific and cultural institutions: the Museum of Archeology, the University History Museum, the Museum of Nature, the Astronomical Observatory at the Research Institute of Astronomy, the Scientific Library, its overall holding contains several million books, the scientific, demonstration and educational center “Landau Center”, Center for Contemporary Art —"Yermilov Center". All this helps the students to be many-sided, motivates them to learn something new, to condut their own research and explorations."

There was held a presentation of the National Science Foundation (NSF), an independent federal agency, aimed at promoting the progress in science, improving the living standards and well-being, and ensuring the national defense. The foundation’s activities are the driving force of the US economy enhancing the security of the nation, advancing the knowledge to sustain the global leadership.

During the meeting, the Administration of the schools also presented the University treasures.

“The School’s calling card is graduates. Among them there are 32 academicians and corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, over 70 graduates were awarded the state and international prizes. Since 2011, our students have won the International Student Tournament four times. We offer the graduates to cooperate with various Ukrainian and international institutions, which guarantees the further development prospects”, shared the work results the Dean of the School of Physics and Technology, Ihor Hirka.

“Currently, the School has a powerful potential: the faculty members of nine departments provide professional training for 230 students. The faculty сonsists of academicians and corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Merited Education Workers of Ukraine, more than 30 doctors of sciences, full professors and 40 PhDs, associate professors. The School also has its own research and methodological labs”, said the Associate Dean of the School of Physics, Dmytro Rokhmistrov.

The Dean of the School of Chemistry, Oleh Kaluhin, emphasized that the research at the School is conducted in different areas: Physical Chemistry of Solutions, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and Chemistry Metrology, Environmental Chemistry, Computer Chemistry and Molecular Design, Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

During the meeting, the participants discussed the prospects of further cooperation.

The delegation also visited the University History Museum and had a sightseeing tour around the city.
