Lecture “How Binary is Our Future? Transformation of Human and Machine”

On April 5, 2018, Karazin University hosted the lecture “How Binary is Our Future? Transformation of Human and Machine” given by Dr. Christian Jung (Berlin, Germany). The event took place with the support of the Ukrainian-German Academic Center.

At the beginning, the lecturer acquainted those present with the most famous erroneous quotations related to technology development, for instance, Bill Gates’ statement “640K ought to be enough for anyone” (1985) or Ken Olsen’s quotation “There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in their home” (1977).

Christian Jung described several important steps to successful project implementation. The first step is an experiment, the next step is learning and research. The stronger the scientific basis, the higher the probability of success. Among the next steps are analysis, concentration, etc.

During the lecture, those present watched a video about the role of robots in modern life. “Unfortunately, the intelligence of today’s robots is still very primitive, but the very fact that most of the work is done by machines is an incredible progress,” said Christian Jung.

In the next video, a human and a robot competed in making cocktails. Despite the fact that the human won, Christian Jung said that robots are stronger: a robot bartender is able to make about 400-500 cocktails without rest.

The lecturer also told about the main trends of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (or Industry 4.0) — a concept that means the development and merging of automated production, data exchange and manufacturing technologies into a single self-regulated system, with minimal or no human intervention in the manufacturing process. According to Christian Jung, Industry 4.0 will make it possible to gather and analyze data from different machines, enabling faster, more efficient and more flexible processes to produce high-quality goods at reduced costs. It also led to the emergence of completely new business models that will contribute to radically new ways of interaction in the value chain.

To visualize this statement, the next video showed a fully automated production of cars, the whole process being carried out by robots and drones.

At the end of the event, the Dean of the School of Computer Sciences, Valentyn Lazuryk, presented Christian Jung with a certificate of appreciation and expressed his hope for further cooperation. Those present had an opportunity to ask the lecturer questions.
