Opening of Exhibition "Women's Education in Kharkiv in XIX — Early XX Centuries"

On March 1, 2018, Karazin University held the opening of the exhibition “Women’s Education in Kharkiv in XIX — Early XX Centuries”.

The Director of the University History Museum, Viktoriia Ivashchenko, welcomed those present. She said that women’s education is an important and at times even dramatic page of women’s history. According to her, this topic is closely connected with Kharkiv University, which did not stay aside from the world events, including women’s struggle for education. In particular, in the 1880s, when the issue of women’s university education was raised, Kharkiv University was the only one to support the initiative.

She also said that the exhibition shows the connection of Kharkiv University with all the levels of women's education — from primary to high school.

The Dean of the School of History, Serhii Lytovchenko, briefly described the history of women’s education and pointed out that it has deep roots.

“At the exhibition, you can see photos and documents reflecting the everyday life of girls who studied in schools, institutes for noble maidens, and Kharkiv gymnasia. By the way, Kharkiv University professors very often taught at these institutions. For example, Petro Hulak-Artemovsky taught French at the Institute for Noble Maidens,” said the exhibition curator, employee of the University History Museum, Iryna Ivanenko.

Besides, the School of History students Anastasiia Pasko and Anna Filozhenko helped those present to imagine the atmosphere of those educational institutions by reading some excerpts from schoolgirls’ memoirs.

The exhibition is open for visitors until April 30, 2018.
