From Biophysics to Nobel Prize: Karazin University Gives an Opportunity to Receive the Most Prestigious Scientific Decoration

On October 4, 2017, the Nobel Committee officially announced the names of the 2017 Nobel Prize laureates in Chemistry. It went to three biophysicists Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson.

Interestingly, while the Nobel Prizes in biophysics do not exist, it was the biophysicists who received a third of Nobel Prizes in Physiology, Medicine and Chemistry or for their works in the field of biophysics for the last few decades.

At present, biophysics is a popular interdisciplinary speciality that is developing rapidly. In Ukraine, biophysicists are trained only at Karazin University, at the School of Radiophysics, Biomedical Electronics and Computer Systems, and at Ivan Franko Lviv National University, at the School of Biology.

But it is in Karazin University that future biophysicists are studying at the School of Physics, where they receive high-quality knowledge not only in biology and chemistry, but also in physics and mathematics, which makes them real interdisciplinary specialists.

The training of BS biophysicists is ensured by the Department of Molecular and Medical Biophysics in the speciality “Applied Physics and Nanomaterials”. The training of MS biophysicists is provided as well.

Besides, Karazin University provides training under postgraduate and doctoral programs in biophysics. It has its Thesis Committee for defense of doctoral theses and PhD’s theses in Physics and Mathematics in this speciality. Karazin University also publishes its professional scientific journal “Biophysical Bulletin”.

Thus, it is in our University that the training of “full cycle” biophysicists is provided.

Moreover, Kharkiv University is known to have trained and employed three Nobel Prize laureates, namely Ilya Mechnikov (biology) and Lev Landau (physics).

So, it is likely that it is at Karazin University that the future Nobel Prize laureates are currently studying or working.
