Unique Karazin University: Get in Touch with Science in Landau Center

The LandauCenter is a science exhibition center opened at Karazin University a bit less than two years ago, though it has already become popular both among Kharkiv citizens and residents of other cities and towns coming here to excursions. Having emerged as the first exhibition ground of interactive science in Kharkiv, it still remains the only University-based intellectual leisure center  in Ukraine.

Annual exhibitions devoted to different sciences — physics, mathematics, biology, mechanics, informatics — are the beginning of the LandauCenter history. Lots of excited kids, surprised schoolchildren, impressed students and interested parents have visited the Center every weekends. A great interest and resonance caused by the Center activity promoted the increase of rooms, the number of exhibits and transfer of open hours. From now on, the Center will work on weekdays as well.

The renewed LandauCenter is a permanent exhibition with unique exhibits created by the University scientists and scholars, moreover, every week you will be able to enjoy a new exposition devoted to a certain subject-matter. Everyone will find something close to them: active children try an air cannon and handle the sails opening new laws of physics, more assiduous ones think over the sound creation playing the piano where you can see the musicViktoriia Kruhlova, the Director of the Center, shares her memories, “I watched the scene: a boy was sitting first on a big chair for several minutes, then on a small one, later he said that he was wondering a question “Am I big or little?”. Another case: during the archaeological excavations, a schoolboy dug a bone and began to imagine the battles of dinosaurs, and another, having found a clay cup, told a story about the family that lived there in antiquity and used that crockery. That is to say, we fill some things with certain meanings, but children expand them and open new senses.

In January 2017, on the occasion of its third anniversary, the educational and demonstration center LandauCenter held the opening of a new high-energy room. Here you can see the Eastern Europe’s largest Tesla coil generating half a million volts discharges, “Jacob’s ladder” and the equipment to conduct classes in Electricity and Discharge Voltage.

Today, the Center has sections about various sciences such as physics, anatomy, optics, mathematics, etc., though visitors are mostly impressed by the social corner where you can try on glasses to realize how people with poor eyesight perceive the world, and try to overcome obstacles and fulfill certain tasks in a wheelchair. It enables children to understand how difficult it is, brings up mercy among them, and they start treating such people with another attitude.

The LandauCenter goes beyond popularization of science and learning, it does not only engages in experiments, encourages discoveries, excites the desire to study better, but also develops imagination, sets up social and psychological relations, shapes values and a position in the world, educates and cultivates love. It is a space for everybody — each will find here something for themselves, a new format of enlightenment in the University.

Come to the LandauCenter to get in touch with science! Karazin University is pleased to welcome you here.
