Unique Karazin University: Time-Travel at Museum of Archaeology

The University has been preserving and enriching the classical education traditions not only by imparting the fundamental knowledge to its students, but also by fostering high culture, and cultivating spiritual values for more than two cneturies on end now. The scientists raise ancient objects from the depths, and recreate the history. The University had its first collection of antiquities at the Antiquities Lab as far back as in 1807, which eventually evolved into the Museum of Fine Arts and Antiquities. Today's Museum of Archaeology is an European-scale museum, a unique ground for historical science in Ukraine, the calling card of both the University and Kharkiv.

The exhibits here date back to 3,000 BC. Among them are antiques of the Bronze Age and early Iron Age, the Later Roman period of the Great Migration and the Cossacks time, antiquities of Bondarichin, Saltov, Romen and Ancient Russian cultures, unique findings of the Ancient and Byzantine civilizations made in the Tauric Chersonese, which is under the UNESCO protection, and artifacts from Bilske Horodyshche, which is the largest settlement in Eastern Europe believed by many researchers to be Gelonus mentioned by Herodotus.

The new exhibition hall displays working tools, horse harness, everyday objects, craftsman's tools, jewelry, religious objects made of stone, bone, flint, bronze, copper, iron, clay, glass, white metal, amber and other materials. Those all are the discoveries made during the excavations at the ancient settlements and sites. They reflect the way of live of the people of that time, their household development, military art, art, and tell us of their perception of the world.

The Director of the Museum, Iryna Shramko, names a few interesting things to see here: Bone Psalium, catapult payload, fibulae (pins for fastening garments), foreign glass goblets and coins, a Roman set, jewelry molds, oinochoe (a decorated jug), an eastern mirror, Cossack pipes, rabbit bow finials, and a vessel portraying people holding spears. However, one object of an unusual sacrifice stands out among them all. It is remains of a dog wearing a necklace of faience beads on its neck.

The wall panels and art paintings, the effectively illuminated showcases with interesting exhibits in them, the floor-mounted discoveries and the modern equipment are just a sneak peek at what can fairly be called a masterpiece of modern museum art. The holdings of the Museum contain about 200,000 items, and the archaeologists themselves cannot tell the exact number. The Museum also has the “Gold Rooms” for objects made of precious metals and stones.

The Museum is always happy to take you on a journey through time. You can visit our permanent exposition, or come to see temporary exhibitions featuring particular historical dates, and events, and dispaying the findings of archaeological expeditions. You can come to a show of an interesting scientific film, or to get an expert’s consultation. You are welcome to come to our Museum of Archaeology to discove how our predecessors lived. Karazin University is always happy to give you a ride on its "Time Machine" .
