Unique Karazin University: Delving into the Past at University History Museum

As a powerful scientific, academic and cultural center, Karazin University is more than two centuries old, and has made a great contribution both at the national and international level. In particular, it is famous not only for its scientific and educational achievements, but also for its alumni.

The University History Museum is discovering the infinite world of the Alma Mater. It is for more than 40 years that the University History Museum has been collecting and preserving the priceless heritage to enable contemporaries to delve into the past.

One of the first university-based museums in Ukraine has received new premises on the occasion of Karazin University anniversary, which is is now  a retro styled hall with the wooden framed cases reminding mobile balustrades, massive chandeliers as if of the previous centuries, which creates an illusion of travelling in time. Here, you can trace the origins of the University: the unrealized  building design and the first premises, the originals of documents and old photos, editions of the first newspapers issued in the University Publishing House, textbooks of the time, lecture notes, devices of the XIX century, and even the festive uniform of professors and students. All this, together with the writing utensils and the University President’s desk, a wooden microscope and one of the first telephones of Kharkiv, evokes a feeling of belonging to the epoch.

The permanent exposition depicts students' everyday life and scientific achievements of the University scientists and scholars. Among the great number of exhibits, the most striking one is the mechanism first used in the USSR to receive liquid helium in great volumes. Here, you can learn something new and be amazed at the seen: Nikolai Barabashov turns out to have been interested not only in astronomy, but also in music, which is confirmed by the electrical piano of his own design. There you can also see the Koran that is a little bit bigger than half a match box.

A separate section is devoted to the student battalion troopers and the faculty who took part in World War II. The military uniform, black-and-white photos and frontline letters remind us of those hard times. The Museum exhibits include objects of the present and the recent past telling about the contemporary University, the scientific activity of scientists, sports achievements and student life.

Although, only the most remarkable things are on dispplay in the permanent exposition, while most of the objects are kept in the Museum depositories totalling more than 15,000 items. Moreover, the Museum conducts temporary exhibitions on various themes connected with the history of the University and the city, holds presentations and meetings, shows movies in the cinema hall.

“Recently, we have not only been using the archives, but we have been also engaging the University faculty, students and alumni. This is how, for example, the frontline album was created. To contribute to the most recent exposition, a student from Poltava region, instead of food, brought a stone of 1920s. It definitely inspires interest, makes people bring their friends,” tells the Director of the Museum, Viktoriia Ivashchenko.

Everyone interested can visit the Museum on weekdays either by themselves or with an excursion, which can be arranged beforehand. You are welcome to come to the University History Museum and delve into the past!
