Karazin University Graduates Participate in Creating Artificial Sun [video]

Graduates from Karazin University School of Physics and Technology are involved in nuclear fusion research at the world’s most powerful Wendelstein stellarator in Germany. The fusion reactor produces plasma with the temperature of a hundred million degrees, which is five times hotter than the temperature in the center of the Sun. At this plant, physicists are trying to create an inexhaustible source of clean energy.

The Wendelstein project involves 400 scientists from around the world. Before practical implementation, plasma experiments are computer-simulated by three Ukrainian physicists, graduates from Karazin University School of Physics and Technology.

According to the recent data, the scientists have managed to sustain plasma with the temperature of a hundred million degrees within the stellarator for six seconds. In December, after the stellarator’s upgrade, the scientists are planning to increase the duration of plasma combustion to ten seconds, and in 2020 — up to half an hour. In the next two decades, the physicists promise to create a fusion power plant capable of a continuous fusion reaction. This will be a breakthrough in nuclear power industry and will make it possible to abandon nuclear power plants.

For reference. The School of Physics and Technology is one of the four physics-oriented schools at Karazin University, where the quality of education is ensured by the highly qualified faculty. This is confirmed by annual victories of the students at international and all-Ukrainian competitions, tournaments, contests of scientific works, the graduates’ employment in the leading research centers and universities both inside and outside the country. Besides, the graduates can continue their studies under Master’s Degree and Postgraduate programs, in particular, at the best universities of the USA, Germany, Canada, Japan, and other countries.
