School of Sociology of Kharkiv National University named after V.N. Karazin was founded in 1990 and became the first school of Sociology in Ukraine.

School qualifies following specialists:

Bachelor's educational qualification degree (4 years studing) in Sociology and Political Science.

The form of state certification - State Exams "The Theory and History of Sociology", "Methodology and Methods of Sociology" (“Sociology” training direction), "The Theory and History of Sociology and Social Work", "Methods of Sociology and Social Work" (“Sociology” training direction with specialization in Social Work), "The Theory and History of Politics," «Applied Political Science» (“Politоlogy” training direction).

Master`s educational qualification degree (1 year study period, a form of state certification - Master's work with defence in the SEC). There are Sociology, Social Work, Politology and the master program «Media-Communication» (study period 1.5 year) specialties.

Specialist`s educational qualification degree (study period 1 year, form of state certification - Research paper with defence in the SEC). There are Sociology, Social Work and Politology specialties.

The school teaches 467 full-time students and 180 extramural students from Ukraine, Russia, China, Nigeria, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Kazakhstan.

Yearly six faculty` departments offer their students new specializations. Today these are the "Sociocultural examination", "Social structures and processes", "Advertising and Public Relations", "Communicative management", "Methods of Sociological Research," Political marketing and Political consulting", "Political Sociology", "Social management", "Social Security", "Management of social processes".

Students of the school study more than 100 different courses, including the Methodology and organization of sociological research, Sociological accidence of Marketing, Conflictology, Public Relations, Sociology of Advertising, Sociology of Mass communication, Sociological methods of market research, Technology of electoral sociological research, the Theory of international relations, Comparative politics, History and Theory of political parties, Political elites and leadership, Political branding, Social policy, Internet-communication, Cyberculture and Virtual reality, Web-design and blogging, Graphic design as a form of social communication, Selfpresentation and image in the media context, Information law and intellectual property, etc.

The best students are awarded with prize fellowship named after renowned scientists M. Kovalevsky and H. Jakuba.

School graduates work at universities, advertising and marketing agencies, media, news services, public opinion research companies, public administration and local government, social services etc.

School students usually take an active part in numerous competitions and contests. Only during the 2009-2010 school year, they have won prizes at the National competition of student` research in sociology, political sciences, the student's Olympiad in sociology, the Third nationwide student`s PR-projects competition «The Golden Compass», University level of the International Contest of Ukrainian experts named by P. Jacyk, International academic rating "Golden fortune", selection process scholarship program of the Victor Pinchuk «Tomorrow. UA» for researchers in psychology and sociology, Kharkiv city competition "The Young Person of the 2010" in the "Public work" subdivision and so on.

School of Sociology has a postgraduate and doctor degree system. It has the specialized Council of doctor degree in sociology defence by three specialties: 22.00.01 – “Theory and History of Sociology”, 22.00.04 – “Special branches of Sociology”, 22.00.03 – “Social structures and Social relations”.

The School has an advanced material base and works over it modernization.
