The department is headed by: Igor Leonidovych Mykhailin, Doctor of philological science, Professor, Academician of Higher Education Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, an author of 370 scientific works, including 3 manuals – “Bases of Journalism” (Kharkiv, 1998, 2000; Kyiv, 2002; Kharkiv, 2004 – Russian translation), “History of the Ukrainian Journalism” (Kharkiv, 2000; Kyiv, 2003; Kharkiv, 2005), “Journalistic education and science” (Sumy, 2009), that were published and classified by the Ministry of Higher Education as “A manual approved for institutions of higher education”, and also monographs “Literary Kharkiv. Poetry” (Kharkiv, 2007) and “Journalism as Universe” (Kharkiv, 2008). I.L. Mykhailin is a co-author of the book: “Modern dictionary of Literature and Journalism ”. There were 12 PhD theses made and held under his heading.

Journalism department was founded in February, 1996. Such manuals as “Bases of Journalism” (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004), “History of the Ukrainian Journalism” (2000, 2003, 2005), “Journalist’s education and science” (2009) by I.L. Mykhailin, manuals “The fundamental principle of the journalist’s creative work” (2000) by O. Neruh, “Rhetoric as a main compound of antique mass communication” (2004) by T.V. Kazakova, “Essay as an art-journalistic genre” (2007) by M.A. Balaklytskii, “Ukrainian pereodization: history and modernity”, a scientific digest (Kharkiv, 1998), and also monographs “ “New religiosity” of Ivan Bagryanii ”(2005) by M.A. Balaklytskii, “Mikhailo Dragomanov and the paper “Volnoe slovo” (1881–1883) polemicizing with Russian social Journalism” (2006) by N.S. Goncharova, “Ukrainian modern advertising myth” (2010) by L.M. Khavkina

The department offers such courses as “History of the Ukrainian Journalism”, “Foreign Journalism”, “Theory and History of Social Communication”, “Copy Editing”, “Bases of Journalism”, “Theory and Methodology of Journalist’s Creative Work”, “Journalism Management”, “Public Relations”, “Deontology of Journalism”, “Economy and Organization of Mass Media”, “Bases of Advertising Activity”, “Journalistic Investigation”, “Press Offices and Journalistic Investigation”, “Activity of the Editor in Chief”, “Journalistic Education and Science” and other professionally oriented education subjects.

The department held The International Scientific Practical Conference “Kharkiv and Kharkiv University in the Development of the Ukrainian Journalism: from the weekly newspaper “Kharkovskie izvestiya” to the paper “Kharkivskii universytet” (dedicated to 190 anniversary of the university press)”, 19-20 of January, 2006.

Since 2009 the department has been publishing its scientific journal “Visnyk Kharkivskogo Natsionalnogo Universytetu imeni V.N. Karazina. Series: Social Communication”.

The leading scientific problem of the department are: “History of the Ukrainian Journalism”, “History of the foreign Journalism”, “Theory and history of social communication”, “Spiritual search in the modern Journalism”, “Phenomenological and functional features of the modern advertising activity”.
