History

Department has been founded during the resumption of work of Kharkov university at 1933. Till 1986 it was called the Department of general mathematics. Associate Professor P. O. Solovyov at 1933-1941 and and Full Professor M. M. Marchevsky in 1943-1956 were first Heads of the Department. At 1956, Department was united with the Department of Higher Algebra and Number Theory, Full Professor A. K. Sushkevich was the Head of it. He continued be the Head of the united department till 1961. In 1961 Assotiate Professor O. S. Leybin became Head of the Department. In 1963 the department again separated and O. S. Leybin remained its Head till 1972. Afterwards, Full Professor D. Z. Gordevsky was Head of the Departmaent at 1973-1979, Associate Professor O. V. Uvarov - at 1979-1995. Note that Full Professor D. Z. Gordevsky was the first Dean of new School of Mathematics and Mechanics of Kharkov University at 1961-1968, and Associate Professor O. V. Uvarov - at 1991-1995. At 1995-2007 Full Professor V. A. Zolotarev was Head of the department; during these years he also was the Dean of School of Mathematics and Mechanics. From 2007 Full Professor A. A. Yantsevich is the Head of the department.

Graduate Degree Education

During many years, the Deparment graduates specialists in mathematics and teachers of mathematics (Masters of Science, Specialists and Bachelors of Science). Besides the lecturing for the students of the School of Mathematics and Mechanics, lecturers of the Department teach higher mathematics, methods of mathematics and informatics students of Schools of Geography and Geology, Chemistry, Radio Physics, Ecology, Sociology, Philology, Foreign Languages and other. The Department supports institutes of higher education of the Kharkov Center for Institutes of Higher Education in teaching mathematical disciplines for all educational units. Department provides the post-graduate course in calculus. During recent years in the Department were presented 1 Ph.D thesis and 1 doctoral thesis.

Science

The main branches of the science work of the Department are:

• model representations of non-linear non-selfadjoint and non-unitary operators and its applications (V. A. Zolotarev, Ye. A. Kogut, S. M. Zagorodnyuk, O. V. Rozumenko, V. A. Kuznetsova);
• random process theory, especially, spectral properties of random processes (A.A. Yantsevich);
• methods of solution of problems of mathematical physics, non-linear oscillation theory, inverse problems, difraction theory, problems of computational mathematics and electrodynamics (O. A. Anoshchenko, I. G. Kudintseva, V. A. Rezunenko);
• geometry of manifolds and submanifolds, Hamilton systems with bounded trajectories (V.T. Lisitsa).

In total during 2005-2009 members of the Department published more than 60 papers and took part in work of 19 conferences dedicated to the topical questions of aforementioned mathematical branches. During many yearsScientists of the Department effectively collaborate with leading foreign specialists in mathematics (Germany, Israel, Russia, Bulgary, Jordan, Syria etc.)

At the present time, the Department's total teaching staff of 13 individuals includes 2 D.Sc., 6 Ph.D., and 3 members of teaching auxilliary staff.

Education

Every year 5-8 special courses are read, 1-3 of which are new.

Special courses: Harmonic Analysis and its Application; Triangular Models of Operators; Geometry of Random Surfaces; Harmonic Analysis of Operators; Foundations of Random Processes Theory; Orthogonal Polynomials and its Application; Polynomial Non-Stationary Random Sequences; Spectral Analysis of Random Processes and its Application; Eigennumbers in Riemann Geometry; Integral and Summatory Equations.

During the last 5 years (2005-2009), members of Department developed 10 textbooks and manuals for the higher institutes of learning, and also prepared large quantity of individual examination and control tasks etc.
